The balance seems pretty good to me. In fairness they are made commercially like this so not difficult to copy. Quite often, normally when aimed at leather workers the handle is made of stacked leather.

It will be for general duty use. I do have a need for a carving mallet some times but I’m also going to have a go at some leather work at some point so I expect it will get used for that as well if needed.

I like making my own tools and this is the second mallet I’ve made although the other was all wood.

I don't need one as already have half a dozen in various sizes, just like it.

If you do a google image search for Leatherwork Maul you should get lots of good stuff for inspiration. Weights for these generally start at 16 Oz’s and go up to about 40 Oz’s. Mines just over 23 Oz’s.
