I have got two 1/4 inch silver steel bars I was going to sand them down to make spares but I found that one set of bushes fit the 1/4 bar 12.07mm x8.32mm, So I started to sand the bar sanded to the 11.88 x 7.36 these bushes fitted half way up the bar The third set of bushes sanded some more to fit 11.97 x 9.82 , I would have to sand even more to fit the 7mm bushes, So the bushes I have got means that I have to have 4 mandrels to get a good size to fit different pen kits,
This shows that the ID size of the bushes is not a universal size. This mean to get the kits to fit the finished blanks throw away the mandrel bar keep the bushes and make a set of centres to turn between

Life as I see it true sizes come at a price. I measure important things like mandrels and bushes before at least there is time to consider. My go no go guage is the brass sleeves more than one nothing worse than over or under sized bushes then a mandrel that varies savings over.

I agree, and bloody annoying it is too. I use a Rotur mandrel and bushings from some suppliers just will not go all the way. (I do like a bush that goes all the way). Manufacturers need to be less tolerant with their tolerances.:vangry:

This is one of the reasons I gave up on mandrels (and bushes for the most part) and turn between centres.

Barry, if you are used to working to engineering tolerances, the tolerances you will find on pen kits, bushes and mandrels will make you weep.
