Hi,

I picked up a cheap tester lathe to see if this is the hobby for me and my partner. However it has a 3/4 x 16 spindle not a morse taper. What type of mandrel will I need and can anyone point me in the direction of how to fit it?

Called an msc 1000 I think it's based on those swl350 Chinese things on ebay

A collet holder can be fitted as it is a common thread on Taig and many small lathes and you can fit a collet to suit your mandrel to hold it,also a mandrel saver will fit on the other end,I turn but one half two piece or one one piece at a time.Reason the whip you get the longer you leave the length of your mandrel. Also what I do is cut off the thread on the mandrel because the threaded section is smaller than the mandrel.

Yes, that Pen Mandrel looks like it will fit your Lathe.

A collet fits inside a collet chuck. There are lots of different types depending on the machine it’s intended to fit.

If the lathe has come with the tailstock spindle (part 1) and drive centre (part 2)

Then turn any piece of wood between centres and you will find out if you like turning.

By the way one of the best lathes I had (gave to my sonin law years ago) was a woodfast big lathe ,it had a solid drive shaft. Richard Raffan used an Identical one to mine as his main lathe for years. This referring to slid shaft in your lathe there are work arounds.

Just a quick one how do I remove the headstock, the manual is useless and I know you can change the spindle out for another as it comes with a bowl turning bit. The manual says to use the spanner on the flat part of the bit. However the motor just makes it spin. Is there a locking nut I've missed

I managed to fix my issue but now I'm having another. I purchased the previously mentiones madrel but when it spins the end of the rod is so far of centre its doing circles. Both the centres and the mandrel are true. It appears the headstock adapter isn't screwing on all the way so isn't done up fully. Any reason why? It's the correct tpi and sizw

If you are running the mandrel without the tailstock in place then the end may look like it is running in circles.
This could be down to the length of the shaft and cetrafugal force making it appear to do so you need to bring up the tailstock to support it and then look to see if this cures the problem.
Do not over tighten the tailstock on the end of the mandrel otherwise you can put a bow into the shaft it is there only as support

Hi did as advised its not the tail stock the headstock adapter looks like it has to many groves so is not actually fitting. I've wasted over 170 quid so far and feel like chucking it in
