Hi all!

Due to the pyrale disease, I recently got some interesting (I mean big) boxwood. One of it has strange black marks, in fact little cracks:

I tried it on a bowl, 145x52 mm. Despite the cracks - not that long - the whole block is sturdy:

To enhance the rough side, I left two zones untouched by the gouge; I only took the bark off:

Any idea of the origin of the marks ? Frost crack ? But why do they stop on two special rings, as in first pic?
Thanks for the answers!

Thanks to all of you. It was a pleasure to turn, I love the weight and the silky touch of boxwood...
Really, no idea of what is the origin of the cracks?

They look like drought cracks from years without much water allowing the wood to dry out, or they could also be storm twists (was the piece very tall?)

Its a very nice piece Pierre. I am afraid I cannot throw any light on the origin of the cracks although given their shape some form of stress crack certainly seems feasible.
