A friend turned up yesterday, and we spent some time messing about in the workshop.
He seemed a bit too good at this pen turning lark, and I'm beginning to suspect Walter may have done this sort of thing before!:thinks::funny:

Anyway, bit of an experimental thing.
The wood is Cotoneaster, "Knurled" with the Sorby spiraling tool.
The clip tube shape was governed by the pith inclusion in the blank, which needed to be removed, but I do actually quite like it now.

I did the blanks, turned one tube true, then went to make the Tea.
By the time I'd got back, he'd nearly finished it!
So It's sort of a collaboration.
Happy day anyway!
Thanks Walter.

I like the idea of turning pens into a two man job .. :whistling:

That's very gentlemanly of you to allow an "apprentice" into your workshop Neil:whistling:

It was a bit of a risk Bob.
Couldn't find some of my tools after he'd used them!
Instead of leaving them in random places, he'd put them back in the rack! very unnerving!:whistling:

Nice collaboration! The knurling must have been a bit of a challenge - no doubt it'll get things stirred up over Sorby Pen Wizards again! And at least it wasn't Terry visiting you, he would have had all of your tools in his boot while you were brewing that cuppa!

It was indeed a grand day. Thanks for the tea and the beef sandwich Neil, and for the old No 4 plane to restore ( I love restoring old tools).

The Sorby spiralling and texturing tool has potential. I enjoyed playing about with it and with a bit of practice I might even get regular spirals from it.

I know people who have made their own with old gearwheels. Might have to visit some more friends and pinch their ideas (and gearwheels)

Good luck to the pair of you, sounds like fun and an odd shaped pen to come from it but that is not unusual.
A tidy workshop is a happy mind init?
