Hi, Guys,

Some of you may have seen pens I've made in the past from planks from a pallet given to me by a mate. The wood is called Meranti, and it's such a shame that gems like this are used to make packing cases and pallets:down::down::down:

This is a Euro in the mid-brown I have but the colours range from yellow/beige up through all the browns to the deep reds - and all from the same pallet!

Up through the grits to 1500, one swipe of white spirit to clean out, and pop, the grain, three coats of friction polish.

Bob.

Please excuse the crap piccies!

Superb Bob you just wouldn't believe where the wood came from. These fat Euros are becoming a firm favourite of mine I think we should have a 'Fat Euro' competition.

Lovely Pen bob. I'll now be looking at pallets in a different way.

Hi, Ed. Have you ever tried making a Slimline but substituting the centre band with one from a Euro? It's a way of getting more pen for your money, especially when the blank is too good to have most of it on the workshop floor!
Hi, Paul,
Yes, you should look at pallets with avarice - if the guy ain't looking throw it in your motor and get out of there!

Thank you for your comments, chaps!

Check out the crates that Indian sandstone flags are delivered in. Paving contractors usually chuck them away but they are made from plantation-grown eucalyptus and mango wood. Wastage is high, you'll have to go through a lot of material to get a little that isn't full of faults or nail holes but the eucalyptus particularly can be nicely figured and the mango is often spalted. Both can be pretty wet so you'll have to dry what you get for a few months at least. What you don't actually use makes terrific firewood!

Great looking pen Bob

I never seem to get any pallets other than pine ones

Bob, this is a beaut for sure, and as already stated it is hard to believe that the wood was thought only good enough to be made into a pallet ... Great finish my friend ...

Bob Don't put your pictures down cos they have improved so so much, I for one am pleased for you because the comments you attract are also so much nicer init?
I will ask you to go a step further if you would, that is to lose all crap and background stuff. Just the pen and plain background please nothing else to detract the eye ta.
The pen itself is once again a beaut from that pallet you really did find a pot of gold in that one mate Lovely grain, lovely finish and nicely turned init?
I missed out the other day with a server being shipped in on a pallet and one strut stood out from the others in that pallet.
The lads said they would save the pallet for me so I could get that strut out of it but I went back and someone had taken it before I got there.:down::sob::sob:

Another great place to find fascinating Scandinavian timber here used to be glass merchants the timber is long, heavier straight grained and other it has to be for those huge sheets of glass. Wilma and me spent a few months and built a large back verandah with this timber it came up a treat. Over here Meranti is sold by the metre for decking and another real source is the hardware store for fancy picket type fencing pieces even better.

Like your enterprise and your pens but IMHO a real difficult timber Meranti looks like Palm tree when you finish it especially across the grain. :bravo:

Kind regards Peter.

Hello, Peter, Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the info - it's good to know that meranti is used for useful things other than pallets!

Bob.
