I will be moving to a much smaller house in the very near future, and I have a large double sunlounger that I will have no room for, was thinking of selling it but its the wrong time of year so just decided I would throw it in the local skip, sitting here going through the forum looking at pen kits and blanks I suddenly realised that sunlounger is made of indonesian Teak ( bought it when we lived in singapore)
so tomorrow is dedicated to taking it apart so it can be used for blanks , will have more than enough for me to practice on
Cheers
Ray

The deadly Pen disease has taken hold mate everything is fair game now. Teak is a tough timber to work ,can have some nice grain.

Just realised i have the patio table that came with the set in my workshop as it got damaged on a very windy night last year,,
also got the round pole from the sunshade that got blitzed a couple of years ago, going to be in Teak heaven for a long time, so will have enough to practice practice practice untill I can get an acceptable finish, already decided to go down the melamine route for finish on wood

If you have a log fire in your house Ray, you'll soon be very picky about what you put in that too. The rest of us certainly are:whistling:

When i move I will be taking my large shed with me, and will install a log burner in it to keep me cozy, as im moving to kirkmichael which is very near glenshee,,,, for you guys in englandshire,,, thats a cold place in the winter,,people go sking there,,,, but will definately make sure i dont throw " good wood" in the log burner and being " out in the sticks" means i can get some good wind fall trees, hopefully

If anyone has a charity based project that needs teak i will donate what you need just pm me the details, dont care if you are charging for it as long as a good donation is going to charity, especially cancer research, but any charity qualifies

Any solid wood is fair game in this hobby not just pen turning but any turning. Or in my case model making from wood. And as you can tell any trees that are being given the chop are fair game as well I can wait for it to dry. If you get trees then do so every year so as to keep the supply moving as it dries

I took apart a large patio umbrella that had all the ribs made from teak. I've been making pens from that umbrella for years!
