Ha ha - thanks chaps, a right warm welcome.

No, not been lurking I've only just found the forum today now that I'm getting into this and have a thirst for improving and learning more.

I've got a few fairly nice woodwork hand tools that I use for other work like a Veritas dovetail saw, and a set of Narex chisels, but let's put it this way - they are better than I am currently! :whistling:

I like nice quality tools but also don't have tons of cash floating about or want to get something way better than I'll need for ages yet.

Anyway, here's a couple of bits I've recently done for practise, a mahogany 'toolbox' collet pencil (not sure anyone would actually have one of these in a toolbox!!), an olive wood clicky pencil, and a walnut handle on the magnifying glass.
The Olive just has oil applied to it, the big pencil had a few layers of CA and a bit of a polish, and the walnut piece had sanding sealer applied & sanded down to 800 then a bit of mesh on it, before several layers of CA and a good polish done.

Hope they're not too bad for starters!

The handle doesn't actually show its shine so well here, and you'll also notice the two pieces on the chunky pencil are not the same block so no nicely lined up grain, but these are tryouts really so I don't mind.

All three are good efforts Jim, maybe loose a bit off the bottom barrel on the pencil, but the handle on the magnifying glass has a very good shape to it ..

Take a guess
Great first efforts

On the pencil in the middle the metal part of the nib looks slightly off set to the wood, if this is not a trick of the camera it could be that you have an alignment problem with either your lathe or mandrel, not a criticism of your workmanship Jim, just an observation on something that's easily rectified. :nooidea:

Great start, few niggles as per Doug mentioned but looking really good. .

Background could do with changing but it's better than carpet

Thanks for all the kind feedback and comments guys.

I can't check that pencil offhand as 'she' has put it somewhere....
I 'think' it's a trick of the light or just the pic but I'll check anyway.

First pencil I made was on a home made mandrel as the proper one hadn't come yet, and it flexed real bad!!!
