Grump, thanks for the offer but it is quite a feat to get my lathe where it is, in the shed at the top of the garden, top being the operative work. Out garden looks like it should be in San Francisco. It is so steep that when standing outside the shed you can see directly in to the upstairs rooms.
Your comment about it being out of true had crossed my mind as well. My lathe is a Record DML 24X, the headstock, tailstock, and two end feet are mounted to two heavy gauge pieces of tube, these are just black iron tubing so it could well be out of wack. I was thinking of changing them to bright mild tubing as this is less likely to be out of true.
