If the skew is sharp and this is still happening it could be that you are using it too far down the piece of wood.  Rest it on the top of the wood (bevel rubbing) and gradually bring it back until it starts cutting (it should be like dust at first).  I hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs but when its happened to me that is what it is.
