My attempts at Woodturning

Morning all,
Well here goes, be gentle with me These were my 2nd and 3rd attempts at woodturning. I made them a year or so ago and I thoroughly enjoyed making them.
I must confess I was a bit nervous at first as I'm very unsteady on my feet but Kelvins lathe is a big floor standing beasty which meant I could lean on it a bit
The first is a 9 inch Oak bowl which I use as my fruit bowl, you can see it has a 'not quite finished' look about it, but I'll call 'rustic charm' hahahaaaa, Finished in woodwax 22



The bowl below is a 5 inch Sycamore, finished in walnut oil which I made to go with a spoon I carved.
As you can see, it didn't take me long to go all arty tarty it has a little turned groove and a celtic knot design which was burnt on with my pyrography pen.





I'll post my 4th turning attempt (a goblet) on the forum next week

I don't know why you say be gentle with me these are lovely looking bowls and considering that they are your first attempts I would go as far as saying they are outstanding. Love the Pyrography an art in itself. Your photography skills are also quite impressive. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

A good start.

The tool marks will soon disappear the more you turn and get the feel of the tools.

Like many that begin turning you have gone for the classic dog bowl shape. Keep these and in a few years take them out and look at them again to see how you have improved.

I have to agree with Delboy an excellent start and from the look of them you will improve and those tool marks will be a thing of the past and shapes will change as Derek said a typical newbie shape but well executed for a beginner keep going and you will soon put us all to shame

Thanks guys, yes practice makes perfect as the saying goes. I find it hard to part with most things I make so our house (and my parents home) is becoming a bit cluttered,

That is the only problem finding where to put or give away things that you turn. The family and friends will only want so much.
