My First Acrylic

Here is my first Acrylic.
It is a Christmas gift for someone.

I got the blank from [MENTION=626]flexi[/MENTION] a while ago, thanks Mark, and I have always been a bit reluctant to turn it.
After seeing some absolutely stunning work from you guys I decided to give it a try and WOW am I glad I did.

I enjoyed it so much and have managed my best ever finish.
I turned it and then sanded from 320 grit up to 1000 grit all wet.
I then dry sanded with 0000 wire wool followed by wet sanding with the sanding pads through the full range then put a single coat of G10 on and buffed it up with a soft cloth.

I cannot see any radials on it at all, but (here I go again) I do feel it could/should be a deeper shine I did not want to ruin things by trying it with additional coats as I just did not know. However it does look and feel great whilst holding it Spent almost 5 hours on finishing

I have without a doubt been converted and will make more acrylic pens (Not giving up wood)

Upgrade Gold & Gunmetal + Acrylic
Time spent 8 hours 25 Minute over 2 days
Finish :- Wet & Dry Sanding, 0000 Wire wool sanding, Wet Pad sanding, G10

You have done a great job on that, really nice kit pairing too. Often the location of the clip can be difficult but not on that.... I might have to send you some more!!

A good first effort Gary. As you gain experience you’ll cut down on the finishing process & still achieve an excellent finish.

Glad it’s turned out nice for you, the finishing process is al down to you. There are as many ways of finishing pens as there are turners. If you have a way that works then stick to it. But as for time then that will get quicker as you develop your skills. As Bill said, you may get the same finish in less time as you learn what’s right for you.

Gary ,you did well there will always be many different Acrylics to contend with each one different to turn and finish in their own way.
