Paul - I'm a bit confused as to what you think you did wrong, the cap is turned too large at the cap end, but how did this happen if you as you say, turned it down to the size of the bushings? Looks good as it is but you could, if you feel brave, take the top apart and refine the contours and refinish and reassemble.
