Hi, this is the first pen I have posted, it is my first try at segmenting. I am not that keen on the kit, they seem very variable, but it's all I have at the minute. Please criticize - it's a good way to learn.

Yeah the kit wouldnt win a beauty competition but i like the contrating woods you have used thou the yellow wood is a bit grainy. It is a good start to segmenting i bet you get more imaginative the more you do. :winking:

For a first effort, that's very good and will no doubt lead to bigger and better things. No matter what kit you use, someone will want it and when you get more kits you can experiment more and more. You've certainly turned it well and its got a nice finish but the grain of the wood doesn't make it look quite as good as it probably is in the hand.

The segmenting looks sound as does the turning and finishing ..the kit and grainy wood doesn't come across too well on the photo and it no doubt looks much better in the flesh.

Take a guess
The joints between the segments look good which is the main thing when segmenting, I also don't like the kit but that's unimportant as long as you've achieved what you set out to do, which as it looks like you have, that's all that matters

The segmenting is very good and I like the mix. It looks turned well but that's where I stop with the kit.

It's ok, someone will :love_it: just not me.. Sorry..

Amazilla, the kit is er well not to my taste. The segmenting has got a good joint thats the main thing. The finish on the lighter wood (what is it btw) looks not so good but that is probably the timber and not the turner. All in all a good first effort, the next will be miles better.

The kit was never designed to win a beauty competition and is somewhat out of date now that we dont use and therefore sign cheques and use a pen to sign a credit card slip but if we did it wouldnt be so bad. I think Steven has one in his handbag?

Dont know what the wood is but it looks as if it gave you a bit of a rough ride? Did you cut or scrape?

Hi, thanks for all the comments, I feel I'm on the right track at least.
Yorkshireman, I was told the wood is Iroko, and the Wood Database description fits, but identification is very difficult sometimes I find.
Neil, I used a 3/8ths spindle gouge, it is better in the hand than it looks in the picture but I am still learning ! There are just 2 coats of BLO/ca to finish. It will live in the bottom of my wifes handbag !
