Well, here goes. My first on on here, showing my first Sierra. Dressed in quarter-sawn red oak, unfortunately all the really nice ray-flecks got turned away. Finished in BLO and CA.

There are a few issues with it - it is lightly out-of-round (think a bearing is dying in my lathe, there appears to be a bit of a wobble). Also, it looks like the en of the blank isn't quite square - will try and fix that later. If any else notices anything (other than the quality of the photography) please feel free to dive in and let me know - it is the only way I will learn!

All in all though, I am fairly happy with it. Much less stressful putting it together (only one part to press).

Now on to more!

I think that is the first straight sierra I have seen I like it, but I think the clip end is a bit overturned, but can't quite be sure:thumbs:

You've done a good job on that Alan and being your own critic is a good way of improving although as one myself, I quite often get on my nerves :funny:

I like the pen and you've finished it well but in my opinion which I know isn't everyones is that there should be a slight shape to the Sierra otherwise it looks too thin at the top end. Having said that though, you've done a cracking job

You've done it, you've made a pen well done.
I am not gonna criticise that.
Keep it somewhere safe and look again after you've done a few more and then again after a few more.
This will always be your first and you see how much you will like what you produce then.

That's a fine first attempt Alan. As Grump says keep it and compare it to the pens you are turning in six months to see the difference:thumbs:
I agree with Paul it looks too straight to me and is too thin at the top end to me :thinks:
But that is personal taste :nooidea:

You know what I am going to say Alan ! Yep it's a bit too straight for my liking but who am I to judge. I am sure that it is a damn site better than the first one that I turned. Take on board the advice of keeping that pen to compare it with what you produce over the next few months and you alone will decide on what shape you like the best. Anyhow enough said a fine effort for your first attempt, Well done mate!

I agree, it's a keeper that one,. Looks back on it and then you will see how well you turned this pen..

I think it a bit straight but again I never made a Sierra :nooidea: A well done first attempt, onwards and upwards

I don't agree Don. Along with others that say it's too straight, I believe they it's a little over turned but that is a learning point for Alan.

I like the shape and believe it's just fine..

Don't change anything, if you changed it to suit the miserable fits on here then you will turn pens just the same as us ,,, init..?

Be different, if you like slim then turn slim, if you like meat on it the leave it with meat on it.., init...,

Keep em coming Alan,, top marks..

Hi Alan sorry I didn't say a lot earlier but I didn't have a lot of time
Shape of pens is a personal thing it is your pen and your hobby and you are never going to please all the people all the time but what I will say about your pen is its a great bit of turning with a great finish room for improvement yes but we all have that your start in the world of pen turning is an excellent one and I commend you for it and look forward to seeing you grow and grow you will keep up the good work and keep showing it thank you
