I know I'm teaching some of you to 'suck eggs' as it were but some, like PhillH asked for a tutorial on how I did my herringbone pen. So here goes but please bear in mind I'm not an expert pen maker and there's always more than one way of skinning a cat. Also, I don't need to mention to be careful when using CA (use in well ventilated space) and power sanders (my finger's still sore 5 days later as I caught it on a new belt!)
Drawing no. 1.jpg Drawing no. 2.jpg Drawing no. 3.jpg Drawing no. 4.jpg Drawing no. 5.jpg

As I can only attach 5 files you'll have to imagine the last picture.

Cut the blank in the middle, I made two cuts so that the centres would match due to the thickness of the bandsaw blade. Then trim to the required length. When inserting the pen tube, it must be flush with the end of the blank at the centre of the pen.
If you like, you could cut it short and glue some of the original cut laminates on the end of the blank to form rings like what I did!!

Well, I hope this has been useful to some of you and if you make any pens with this method, don't forget to post some piccies.

Sorry Jim, they're just jpeg's with my written post. I'll see if I can make a pdf, which I've never done before, so fingers crossed.

All a bit too complicated for me ...looks like I'm doomed to making plain old tosh.

What a simple, clear tutorial Dave! Are you a teacher by any chance? Thanks so much, you've really demystified a seemingly complex process.

Would love to see the lady pic - can you put it into a post on this thread please?
