Thought I would post more of my comp pen here, mainly because I made it with a matching desk stand. The pen is sycamore and purple heart with a custom aluminium section (the shape wasn't exactly what I had visualised, if I make another I will reduce the depth of the backward taper) and a custom clip scalloped to mimic the beads and coves. The clip is not perfect mainly because you can't get aircraft grade ally plate any thinner than 6mm. At 2mm (what I used) you only get 1000-grade which is very soft and difficult to machine. I couldn't even polish a decent finish into it!

The stand is ash and tambootie, and was quite difficult to make (for me). On the second attempt I cut a foot into each piece so that I could chuck them and drill the centre out (with a flat bit because my cheap nasty forstners wouldn't go in) and then turn the 'collar' on the base to be an easy fit into the top. Then put both together and turned as a single piece between centres. Finally cut the feet off and finished. There's probably an easier way but I can't think of it ...

David, I know you can get 7075 Al in 3.5mm but havent looked for it recently - cant understand why you cant get it thinner?, 6061 is available in most dims and although not as tough 6063 is widely available and you will get a better finish on it than the 6061.

Neil, I would be very happy with 6061 - it machines well and takes a polish. (Off the top of my head I think the rod I used for the section was 6061.) But the thinnest I can find (without spending ridiculous numbers) is 6mm. This is 1000 grade stuff - almost pure ally and soft as putty. If you happen to find a source for 1.5mm plate in 6061 or above I would be very happy!

Woody, my photography woes are driving me to drink at the moment - but that's for another thread!

Thanks all!

Gorgeous, but enough about me, that is a lovely set.

If you are suggesting that this pen somehow resembles your mug, I shall ritually burn it forthwith ... :face:

And YOU! If you think you can come crawling back from your trollops like nothing happened you have another think coming! You can sleep on the couch tonight ...
