Kits that demand a 13,4 hole leaving a thin skin like veneer on the the pen body.

I drilled a blank in faux ivory that was 15mm across with a 13mm stepped shaft drill. When I finished drilling the hole I accidentaly looked up and the Faux Ivory where I had successfully drilled had sagged quite a lot at the solid part so I held it up briefly and it recovered The pics show the blank and the finished pen body, I put a piece of paper on the kitchen table hence the pics.

Not intended to start a debate but it worked out a 100% success for me. I cut it off the blank made a special device after glue up to support the blank turned it down in teeny steps. I normally use thicker blanks but down to this one left. Its a mongrel product IMHO but the customer threw the challenge to produce this pen to match this letter opener.
I will take more pics later on.

Peter.

Peter,

Due to the continuing ambition of wood suppliers to reduce the dimensions of pen blanks (20mm used to be commonplace but nowadays 17mm seems to be the norm) it is becoming increasingly difficult to produce the larger pen styles. And they've increased their prices to boot! Personally, I don't attempt to turn anything like the Roman Harvest unless I have a decent stick of material large enough to achieve the goal, and that is becoming difficult to achieve. So, you have my sympathy for your problem, and my admiration that you were able to produce that gorgeous pen that you show on your other post. Well done, Peter!

Bob.

Nicely got out of there Peter, you handled it well by the sound of things.
