This is the first piece I turned after my 18 month layoff. I was inspired by an american turner called Tex Isham. I made the piece & was told to enter it in the open gallery at the AWGB Seminar 2009, which I did. There were about 400 pieces in the gallery. I asked Mike Mahony for a private critique because I wanted honest feedback. He called over Ray Key & Bert Marsh to give me their opinions after which Bert patted me on the shoulder & told me it had been picked in the top 50 to go on a year long exhibition around the UK. Gob smacked doesn't describe how I felt. I could have sold it but couldn't part with it.
It is made of Padauk & a corian base. The top is 230mm diameter x 30mm thick. the base is made to match the shape of the top.
It is turned tilted & off centre on a faceplate & the padauk is finished with 12 coats of danish oil & the corian is polished & finished with burnishing cream.
I is just an ornement with no practical use but to sit on a shelf.

When I read the intro thought I had better get smelling salts ready to revive me if this was going to be your best mate well I found it quite a profound statement and having known so many great turners over in the states and here being at the high level of acceptance was to me a given for your work of art Your a modest man Bill proud to have met you on the forum.

Kind regards Peter.:mad: they did not rate it higher but the sweetener was to include your items in the travelling part wonderful recognition such a vast country where woodturning has a great respect and following.

All the best Peter.:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Bill, that is stunning! A perfect match of materials and a design balance that would make a gymnast look unstable. Beautiful :bravo: :bravo:
