Having learned a lesson from cigar one, I then proceeded to trim the bottom end of the next one too short. Now I know that it is critical because the refill won't retract. Duh! More on order, I will get it right.

That wood is to die for ...what do you think Paul.
It is probably one of the best woods I've used so far Ed. it drills well and thought I had to be careful because it would breakout at the end but didn't have to, I thought it would crack easy when turning but it was as stable as anything and it carries an excellent finish. Yup, I love it.

That sure is a cracker that one are you sure it is the tube and not the mechanism as cigar pens do sometimes have a dodgy mechanism well they used to have quite a lot of problems with them

Pretty sure Woody. I've got a feeling the two tubes are different lengths and I've got them the wrong way round.

Thats why I dont buy any of the cigar kits any more Ed some times they are OK and another they are rubbish from any of the suppliers also I'm not keen on the look of them as a kit the clip looks cheep to me which is a shame as they are a nice chunky pen that really shows of the wood its the same with the Jn gents ball point pen the nib end just collapsed when it was pressed in only a fraction but it had to be drilled out so the refill could extend out I did complain about them but to no avail Helen on ebay was selling them

Its a great shame if these kits have failures because they seem to be so well made with screw together parts, a nice weight and size and they do show off the wood as you said.

I've now ordered a few more, hopefully they'll all be good ones.
