A rotten old Acorn gone hard is my guess.
The way you have them place looks like two dogs kissing in silhouette.

I would have gone with Burr Elm to be honest, now with the tip what about Pippy Oak .. :whistling:

Assuming it was cut in the UK it certainly looks like a species of oak, the crowded medullary rays give it away. The small size of the rays suggest a species of Red Oak but my word, it's a wild and gnarly lump!
