I'll be turning my first deer antler soon, and I thought I'd ask for advice. It will be for a bolt action pen, so the blank will be 2" long with a 3/8" hole. I'm looking for advice on cutting, drilling, turning, and finishing it. I think I've read about using a CA finish on antler, is that the best option? This particular antler was given to me by my brother-in-law many years ago. As far as I know it's a shed, and don't know what kind of deer it came from. The pen will be for my b-in-law, so this seems appropriate. I would love to see any photos you have of the process, as well as photos of finished pens.

I know from stick dressing that the core of an antler is very soft and that most antler has a thin outer wall. From this I would summize that you will have to get your blank from near the top. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Turn on a nice day so you can have the shed door wide open. Sharp tools needed to turn as well as frequent trips to the sharpening station. I have finished mine with CA in the past. Sand through the grits as for resin

Everything Derek says above. Plus Wear a respirator. Antler dust will do nasty things to your sinus and lungs.

What size is the Antler? It looks like Fallow Deer antler to me

My authority on Antler is Les in Red Deer most appropriate location. I have STEERED away from Antler. Recently found heaps in a pet shop here apparently dogs chew on it forever. That third last pic shows the makings of an outstanding handle gave me visions of a knock out startling pen top just as it is. Enough your question also go to Les. In our Wood Guild the guys who make walking sticks etc shape the stuff to acheive their aims I will be fascinated now what you do with it.

Peter.
