New Custom Pen and New McKenzie Blank

This is one of our latest ones in a new blank from Tim McKenzie (@mckenziepenworks). This blue is fabulous – add the sparkle that comes with Tim’s DiamondCast blanks and the daylight takes over. Bock #5 nib, a custom nickel clip and three-tiered cap finial make this a simple deco-style pen that really shows off the blank. Beautiful to see, great to hold and use!

Sorry - I should have posted this photo too. It's just a turning detail that I seldom use. The finial has a threaded tenon that passed through the clip and into the cap. The "stepped" finial is just a design detail common in deco items of all sorts. Nothing more than a whim while the lathe was still on.

That’s a very classy pen. I initially had my doubts about the transparency but on looking further it really adds to the design and I like the stepped finial. All in all a lovely pen.

Thanks, guys. This was a prototype blank from Tim. I almost never turn the section out of the same material (I really prefer black ebonite for feel and appearance), I saw this one and decided instantly to do the whole pen with it and minimize the amount of metal I added to it. (I had my doubts about the transparency too, Allen, but it grew on me in about three minutes!) Cleaning cutting oil out of the threads was a bit of a trick...being so transparent and light colored, it showed like black grease. Fortunately, a toothbrush and degreasing dish detergent did the trick. (And, yes - I put her toothbrush back when I was done.) Now the trick will be to replicate it. Got more blanks coming!
