I am new to pen turning, done about 20 so far. Pleased with this one which is turned from a wood called mopane. Ive never heard of it but that's what it said on the packet of blanks. Anyway, I'll have to come clean and admit to using friction polish but we all have to start somewhere. Thanks for looking.

That is one nice pen, well done !
Mopane is a very hard wood and gives a lovely result.

Mopane is an African tree, it is also known as the Butterfly tree due to the shape of the leaves.
An interesting little fact about the tree is that it is host to the Mopane caterpillars, they feed on the leaves.
The caterpillar is then harvested by locals, dried / fried and eaten. These caterpillars are full of protein.

Looking forward to see more of your pens.

Well that's just cheating Sammy..

That's not a newbie pen, you have 20 under your belt.

Excellent looking grain and nice finish. Nice shape as well, not sure if it's the pic but looks like a very little step at the nib end.
