Apart from dying it yourself I have no suggestions.
I will say that is one amazing attempt.

Shouldn't be too hard to dye with turquoise spirit stain. Nice inlay by the way.

That is lovely. At the moment it is superb and if you get blue wood it would be amazing.

That's brilliant Andrew
Having seen how you're working through the challenge I can fully appreciate the effort you're putting in to it.

Unique projects can only get better and better.

One of our national symbols is a Kookaburra( large member of the Kingfisher family eats snakes etc) so named because of its call and laugh there are some exotic smaller ones up north they are captivating your inlay just returned to admire the detail you have used superb.

Kind regards Peter IMHO as good as I have seen better than most.:thinks:

thanks. any advice on your preferences for spirit stains would be grately appreciated. vince from the turners workshop has very kindly allowed me to borrow his vacuum chamber and vacuum pump. i would love to have a go at wood staining. so far my efforts with water based stains have been poor with the stain only weakly penetrating the wood and remaining on the surface despite cycling in a pressure cooker and vacuum chamber.

Did you get a cnc off santa then.

hi i've had the cnc for a few years now it's a cheap do it yourself job made out of high density plastic sheet. you'd laugh at it if you saw it. i have used it in the past to cut out wooden cogs for mechanical wooden clock. at the end of last year i modified it making the y axis rotational. its a bit hit and miss but i'm working on it. i would love to get my hands on a laser but at around £6000 it's out of my price range. i've contacted several companies to see if they would laser cut the wood for me if I prepared the blanks and provided the machine code but so far have had no takers. i've even offered to buy the rotational unit for one company but they weren't interested. currently i'm looking into the pros and cons of altering the cnc to take a laser cutter - andrew

That's absolutely superb !

If you decide to sell those , I'll have some for sure.

Fantastic !

would love to take this further but it's just a hobby at the moment - it took 4 hrs to cut out the bits for this - one bit i had to cut twice as i dropped it on the garage floor - never to be seen again - was a bit mor careful the second time thanks. andrew

You will find by default spirit stains have much more penetration than water based stains.
If possible soak your pieces for a few days allowing the stain to leach in through endgrain,, let them dry thoroughly before cutting them, if necessary recoat them after cutting before putting them in place.
Wish you all the luck with this project it's looking really good so far.

Tell me about it.....Bloody things gave me the fright of my life at 5 am. Was in a deep sleep, thought it was a nightmare.
I got used to it after a few days but it was repeated every morning by one right outside the bedroom window and another on every lamp post in the area.

Our little kingfisher is much more subtle:winking:

Hi Andrew & Fiona

The only S/S that I have use with pens is the Chestnut brand ..Axminster do a trial pack of different colours which are all inter-mixable. ..Worth a try I think .
