I can’t answer that Alan I don’t remember where I got the blank from but the wood type was written on the blank ?

The naming Gods have spoken,in following this the percentage of correct names is always in doubt unless the characteristics are in common with the name. Where I worked for many years the worlds experts in CSIRO FORESTRY and The Australian National University Forestry I have had reasoning and justification to the nth degree.

On ours and other forums the number of people who query certificates of authenticity abound.

Vic I support you in your naming from what is written on your bowl blank,I look forward still to an effective all purpose marking pen? that you can rely on firstly to read and 2ndly to see in future years.

The experts told me unless they do a cross section of the grain,see fruits,flowers, buds, juvenile and adult leaves etc they remain non committal. You say potato I say potato applies.

In my family history incorrect names,dates of births,country of origin plagues us for real accuracy. In every country in the world there are millions of what are called a common names for every timber.

Coming back to your bowl I like the colours,grain and shaping so for me personal preference tells me its a ripper.

Vic, never come across anyone ever calling elm, olive before. I would agree though that the elm is spalted.

Alan, I am unaware of there being a variation of elm called olive elm, but olive ash is fairly common amongst the species of ash Fraxinus Excelsior. This is European ash. Most ash used for joinery, particularly in such applications as architraves, is American ash, Fraxinus Americana, the two differences that Americana is more straight grained, hence the architraves, and it never “Olives”.
