One piece pen pencil sets

Asked a question about making these so only seemed right to post the results. London Plane on the left & Elm Bur on the right. Funny thing is that I am a little disappointed with the elm set. I think they both look OK but I hadn't really thought it through properly before starting. If you look at the London Plane set you can clearly see the 2 blanks match, when I make my blanks I always label them so when making sets I can match them. Didn't really occur to me that it would be almost impossible to do that with a bur as the wood changes so much lol Before machining it was obvious that these 2 blanks went together but not so obvious once machined.

That's so true. I've cut blanks in half for upper and lower barrels and when finished
you would think they came from different timber.

I shouldn't worry too much about the pairing Martin, if they were mine. A bit disappointing for you as the turner maybe, but from where I'm sitting it's pretty obvious that they're a pair, made from the same stock. By comparison to the London Plane pair sitting next to them, no of course they're not as successful, but it's unlikely that you'll be showing the end consumer the comparison, and I'm sure they will see the burrs as a pair, just as I do.

The distinct advantage in Burl twins is just that variety in grain explodes with colour and outstanding finish.

On the other hand that London Plane is just glorious.

Phill, I am not really worried about it, just wasn't the result I had expected having done a few sets peviously the same way. I have some more blanks from the same piece of wood so won't stop me making more, I will just know what to expect next time lol.

Lovely job on them....if you are making more, you may find another one is a more pleasing match, (I can't see 'owt wrong myself) just remember "sometimes were our harshest critics'......till the wife walks in"
