Whilst cutting some Padauk into veneer for a celtic knot yesterday I also cut a pen blank from the same small plank. I angled the cut across the grain as much as the 4" wide plank would allow whilst still getting a long enough blank for a pen.
Glued up yesterday, this is the resulting pen.
Hopefully you can make out the angled grain pattern in the photos, I`m really pleased with the result & thank Peter for showing this type of idea in his recent thread, it`s certainly a great way of livening up a blank from a straight grained piece of timber. I just need to sort through my off cuts pile now to find wood large enough to cross cut so I can try turning pens with grain 90 degrees to the norm.
