Painting Tubes

Hi all,

At the moment I am losing more home made blanks due to some sort of reaction between glue, paint and plastic.

I have tried etch priming tubes and then painting with acrylic and enamel. I have tried spray and brush painting and the results are the same.
What is happening is the inside of the blank shows a mottled effect and, quite frankly, looks absolutely awful thus rendering the blank useless.

If I may ask what paint do most people use and if they know of any interactions between adhesive, paint and plastic. The plastic I use is Aluminite slow and Amazing clear cast. Both types display the same effect.

BTW the temperature in the workshop hit 38 degrees yesterday; bit too warm for me.

I also want to get the best solution.
I’ve read as much as is available. Until I’m convinced there is something better I now spray the inside of the acrylic blank with Rust-oleum, Painters touch, craft enamel, in the nearest colour to the blank that you are turning. I don’t spray the tube.
Cross fingers , it hasn’t failed “yet”.
I also only use “gorilla 5 minute two part epoxy glue” on acrylic blanks.

I use Araldite 2 part epoxy. I wonder if that's the problem. I will try Gorilla glue now. Typical as I have just purchased five sets of Araldite tubes.

Hi, I have used in the past, Halford's own white, or other coloured, spray primer. All my tubes are glued in with medium thick super glue. Had no problems to date.
Another mix in the pot!

I’ve never used Araldite so unable to give an opinion.
Forgot to mention, scuffing the tubes and degreasing them.
Then using gloves afterwards.

I use Araldite 5min epoxy and paint tubes with artists acrylic paint ( brushed) and also the inside of the blank using that old favourite the pipe cleaner. Seems to work fine for me. I do scuff the tubes with emery cloth first. I don’t do my own casting so cannot comment on which resin is being used. I have used Gorilla glue in the past but found I got more tube failures than with Araldite.

I have only ever used 2 part epoxy glue of various brands and always have had the same results of no failures so brands of this type makes no difference even those from the pound type shops. Like many I paint the inside of the blank, I use differnt types of paints depending on what colours I need.

I appreciate that I don't make as many as some but have been making them for some time all the same

I just use craft shop acrylic paints applied by brush and sand the tubes with 120 grit once its dry I use gorilla glue, never had a problem. Sometimes I don't paint because I want the mottled gold effect.

I just paint the inside of the blanks with any acrylic paint that is the cheapest. Don't like the paint too thick so sometimes need to thin before applying with a cotton bud.
Most of the time I just use white but very much depends on the blank itself. Quite satisfying playing around with colours on the same blank to see want effects / shades come thru.
Rub tubes with emery and glue in with araldite slow setting epoxy.
Never had a failure yet.

Maybe pour the resin on the tubes with them in the mould. Or are you doing that?

If I am casting label/stamp blanks etc then that's how I usually make 'em. I don't know of a way to do that if I am making flip pour ones
Your are right though, it would probably solve the problem.
