I have a bundle of blanks that I can send your way, pm your address, as far as the finish is concerned take the advice already given, couple of coats of sanding sealer then work through the grits don't miss a grit to move things along, lightly sand with the lathe at a slowish speed to guard against heat, turn the lathe off and sand in the direction of the grain, wipe off with a bit of tissue move on to the next grit, go to as high a grit as you can, it's a bit time consuming but well worth it.

Regards

Kevin
