I thought about doing this a few times Alex and in my mind, I would have made a jig that the piece of wood for the box would sit in with a wall all around it that you run the router against to make the inside in whatever shape you want.

At the sides I would make a little offset so to allow the fingers to get at the pen.

Yes in a way heaps of Pen rests from Burl timber I use an overhead Router and the plunge is made with a locking foot control that keeps my hands free . I use a half round bit that gives the neatest ending for the groove and never bite off more than the bit will chew so to speak. Hinging can be a nightmare both cost and availability and the slimmer they are made the more degree of difficulty, Absolutely essential to use parrallel guides. Timberbits gives his version of boxes for pens in detail on his site Utube abounds in visual help. IMHO this is a labour intensive path to take and most penmakers seek out ones available stocked and handy for quick choice and profitability.

My thoughts Alex........ Peter.

Not really sure what you are looking for Alex but I made 5 of these earlier in the year, just to 'have a go'. They were so tedious and took much longer than I thought they would so really aren't cost effective when you can buy them from TR for £4.25 each. They were made with a plunge router but fastened to a makeshift 'router table' using lengths of wood clamped to it for fences and stops. I could have made a square for the router to follow but would have needed several to accommodate different size of slots (for different pen styles). Clampable guide fences that I could move about were therefore more appropriate.
I only made 5 and that was tedious, if you're making a lot Alex, good luck to you mate. Sorry about the sparkly pen but it's the only picture I've got of the box.

Well, Ive discovered after all this time that the edit button disappears all on its own. I put these up last evenong then got called away, and hey presto, no edit button when I came back - so sorry about two random pictures. This is what I would have said...

I have these made for me by a local furniture maker. He makes them for me in batches so he can jig up for a run, which makes it a bit more cost effective, but even so, as everybody here has said, they are supremely time consuming and not really cost effective at all. I use them only for ultra premium pens for one particular customer.

I'd be happy to get some for you, but unless you're charging a fortune for the finished package, I'd find another way if I were you Alex.
