I do them in a wooden box like this but charge extra if my customer wants a box to make the pen a gift

The type of boxes or pouches depends on the type of clients you intend to sell to the well off or not so well off a nice velvet Box a cardboard box or a plastic box or just a cheep ol pouch because whatever you use will determine your final price by pushing it up a few quid or a few pence

I think it was Neil who quoted something along the lines of, "a pen in a sock is a pen in a sock, a pen in a box is a gift".
Make of that what you will, but I thought it sounded good if nothing else.
People put boxes in drawers and forget about them, they don't carry them around with the pen.
On the other hand a nice little velvet purse sock thing, they might feel is there to protect their wonderful writing instrument and slip it in there all the time.
To be sure you could always put the pen in a nice little velvet purse sock thing and place it all in a box to be left in drawer and forgotten about.
The two pens I made for twin brother 50th birfdy are nicely presented in a display cabinet at their parents house.

Had I known they weren't gonna use them I wouldn't have made them in the first place, instead I ended up putting them in a a nice little velvet purse sock thing, in a presentation box engraved with their names and built the bloody display cabinet fro them.

Where do you draw the line? If you are selling at a show or static event I would suggest a variety of packaging and ask the customer what they want and charge accordingly init?
If it's for Joe up the pub stick in the dartboard and let him retrieve it, you will never be right for everybody no matter what you offer.

I agree with Woody (and Grumps :goesred:). It depends on the customer and the pen. I wouldn't put fancy fountain pen in a velvet bag I'd put it in a nice box. On the other hand I wouldn't put a slimline in a fancy box. It would go in a velvet bag or cardboard box
Horses for courses comes to mind :winking:

All my pens come with free velvet bag. I have a variety of boxes that they can buy if they're buying them as a gift and will hopefully soon be making my own.
