Does anyone know or have you tried to fit Patriot Pen Blank Drilling Jaws Stiles and Bates
to an Axminster sk100 chuck? ie are the bolt holes compatible?

There are several design elements that determine whether accessory jaws will fit a chuck. Bolt spacing (and size) is just one element. If you look at the Axminster Clubman chuck it has a raised locating element between the bolt holes. On most other chucks there is a depression instead. I used to have a Record SC4 chuck for which I had some Cole jaws. I sold the chuck but still have the jaws. I can screw the record jaws to my Clubman chuck with suitable screws but it’s not secure due to the lack of compatibility with the locating element.

The simple answer is no they will not. That is one reason I own a versa chuck as I can buy carriers to fit a number of manufacturers jaws onto it.

Axminster do some pen blank jaws of their own and they certainly fit.

Some folks use the standard jaws for drilling it seems. Thinking about it I’ve probably done it that way once or twice.
Alternatively you could get some internal jaws for your chuck.

Having purchased so many manufacturers chucks over the years I find dedicated chucks quite t5he go for me. My pen jaws are permanently fitted to my dedicated VicMarc chuck that also has a fixed 1 inch ten thread entry. So I used to have and have reduced the number of lathes and chucks accordingly. To me changing jaws was always a pain in the bum,the screws holding to me are not really up to scratch in closeness of thread or real alignment.

So the bottom line for me has been hit and miss for reasons stated above and my determination in the end to use dedicated ,beaut fitting chucks. Guess it comes down to real use and how long you keep and use things. Your choice.

I Know vicmarc now has a dedicated pen blank vice, but got me when they first bought out their pen blank jaws, one Victorian dealer sold them for more than the price of the set of four.

Look at the dimensions!

Thanks for the replies all of you, the axminster jaws are twice the price of the others and I dont want 4 because I can do that on my record small chuck also the axminster pen jaws have a limitation of 16 mm which is useless for rare and expensive woods where you create blanks that optimize the wood quantity.

So all I wanted to do was attach 2 jaws with right angled grips so as to speed up production since I have a large contract to fill and I dont work metal. So I guess its back to the drawing board.

Yes as you say the Axminster pen jaw set comes with not two but four jaws so I guess that explains the price difference.

If you can find a local machinist perhaps you could get the cheap jaws modified to fit your Axminster chuck? Failing that you’re probably looking at getting a new chuck as well as the jaws. As far as I am aware the Sorby Patriot, Record SC4 and Nova chucks all have similar jaw mountings enabling some interchangeability.

It's the jaw carriers that are incompatible, not the jaws themselves. If you can modify the holes on some axi carriers to correspond with the holes in the patriot jaws, then they'll fit. Or modify the jaws to fit the axi carriers - either way round will do.
