hi all I'm new to pen turning and your forum so forgive any fo pars

I@m trying to find somewhere that sells the kits (not the wood I have lots) but they all seem really expensive even on evilbay, is there somewhere selling at discount - the kits seem more than an ordinary pen?!:( - Im happy to buy several at once -anyway perhaps I'm being naïve but any insights by your good selves would be appreciated, and any other insights or advice well received.

Many thanks in anticipation of your replies Shaun

It all depends on what you want...i cant think that even slimlines would be too expensive @ a couple of quid...what have you been looking at!!
All joking aside try Dan at Taylors Mirfield or Vince at Turners Workshop or Dave at penblanks uk (pitbull on E bay) i have used them all(and others) and cant fault there service:thumbs:

timberbits in australia are worth a look if you want a few- free shipping on over $120 AUD but avoid going over $200 AUD because it is more likely to be caught by the tax man.

Hi Shaun - welcome to the forum

Expensive is a relative term, and with a few possible exceptions you do tend to get what you pay for. If you'd care to give some examples of some kits you regard as expensive, I have no doubt that you will be able to get lots of suggestions for alternatives that are maybe better value.

Welcome Greenmaninthe woods Shaun evaluate what you like, need make a list then since your address is in the UK define this a little and contact members in your area or wood groups seek advice from them, calmly make decisions from recommendations. The so far mentioned dealers are reputable, honest and trustworthy.

Peter.

Timber bits are my favourite and I've never been caught by import tax on any of the orders up to $260 I've had and you can basically halve the price on the website for the cost of their pen kits in pounds

Hi Shaun, How cheap do you want? some pens kits are cheap and versatile such as the slimline/ streamline at less than £2 a pop and a good start to pen turning as they're cheap enough to make your mistakes on. Advance to a bit more expensive such as the Zeta and Sierra and then to Dans/Davegee's/Phils other kits.

Hi Shaun,

I am relatively new to turning pens and have only turned slimline pens and have yet to gain the experience of most on here but I have found this supplier quite cheap and the kits seem fine although I can not comment on the quality compared to other suppliers as I have only bought blanks locally.

Welcome to the forum Shaun. If I were you I'd have a go on the slimline until you get the hang of things. Personally I made a load of mistakes (still do) and am now venturing into the big wide pen making world with the help and guidance of the people on this forum. May the forum be with you. If the cheap crap on e-bay is too expensive then you might as well just give up the idea altogether and buy a pencil from WHS.

The cheap crap on e-bay mostly comes from Rizheng. If you import direct from them you can get cheap crap for about £1 per kit if you buy enough.

Goodness knows why you would want cheap crap anyway, the moderately priced stuff is poor enough quality without looking for worse. :nooidea:

Spiralling opportunity for kit bashing coming up very much like car bashing all pen kits and cars have their devotees and so it is.
