Made these a few days ago for a house warming, the oak is 400 year old, from the barn which is now the new house, got given 4 1 foot lengths of it,about 10 inch square, pretty solid stuff and plenty of it :)

The kit is a JR Gent FP,finished with friction polish and then ren wax,the knife is oak and finished with teak oil...

And a bonus image (notice the piece of oak they're resting on,what shall I do with it? )

Nice set Matty well done mate. Make a nice gift box with the wood, fill the voids with some brass powder or turquoise.

Thanks all,I bought that piece of oak from a carboot, a bloke was selling what was labelled up as 'oak offcuts' but they weren't offcuts, they where the majority of a tree, 3 feet long,3 inch deep and 4 inch wide, got 3 pieces for £4 and the piece above was sitting in the middle of one of the pieces, cut it out soon as I saw it but still unsure, will probably use it to photograph things on,have oiled it a bit

Great for mens gift sets, if the wood was mine it would probably end up as a base for maybe a clock or something similar.

Can I ask where you get the knife kits, I wouldn't mind having a go, at least then if it doesn't work out I can still buy one of yours!

I buy them from here:
Misc 3" Drop Point Blade - Heinnie Haynes

I did a tutorial on them on the forum somewhere,if you need the alli pins, let me know,I have plenty spare..

Also, sorry for them being out of stock,I bought 10 earlier and have 5 on back order

The delivery has been less than 48 hours when I order so don't bother paying for better delivery , they come in stock often and the new blanks have a lanyard hole too

Thanks Matty, it says 2 to 3 weeks on the website, another quick query if I may, where do you get the scabbards from?

I don't usually buy sheaths or scabbards although Heinnie Haynes do sell them in tan and black leather,3 sizes...I bought a black one for a stainless Mora knife to replace the plastic one, think it was about £7

Matt great pressy mate can only admire the courage for restoring real old property. In the 70,s I bought an old house (suit handyman) that had never had hot water means etc etc quite a project never again we watch restorations by Kevin Mcleod he that supercilious
irritating punce but informative scenery nonetheless. I am a victim of garage sales myself. You scored well mate love the knife and pen think you showed them before or at least the knife. The suggestion from Brian is valid with that piece of oak its almost shaped for a box already.

Fantastic set Matty! I'm with Brian on the bit of wood - a nice gift box.

Where do you get your knife blades from? SCRATCH THAT. Note to self: read all posts before asking questions ...:rolling:
