Cracking pens, what finish did you use ???
Cheers
Ray
Oh no another finish process to research, i had decided on malamine for wood but your finish is fantastic , ah well back on tinternet lolThanks Ray
I used CA, but I was having issues, so I stripped them back and used 50% friction polish with 50% thinners. I put 5 coats on, then I used neat friction polish for the last coat. I don't like to use it really, but I've run out of time!!

Hi Craig i have been doing a lot of research and looking at the tutorials on here and elswhere it seems that melamine is a long lasting finish, and as Phil on here recomends it, and his pens are stunning, i thought when a master speaks its best to listen, but having said that I am still researching, even looking at old fashioned french polishing, but i think it all comes down to how long it takes to get the quality finish, and how long it lasts, so will stick to what other people have used and proved, while experimenting with other finishes to give away and see how they lastThat's funny Ray, I was going to stop using CA and try melamine !!!! The only problem with friction polish is it's longevity. I haven't been turning long, but I've read that it can dull over a short period of time, depending on use of course.

Had a good day today and finished all the pens my work colleagues asked me to make. The golfers pen is turned using hickory from an old golf club. The FAT slimline is spalted beech and the medical one is unknown to me?????

Great looking pens Craig, and I noticed my name being mentioned along the way there too - I assure you there are pen makers here who are far better than me.
You've inadvertently lit the touch paper on the ol' friction polish thing again though, and the whole finishing debate. That's OK because people come and go, views change, and not everyone knows where to go to seek information, so discussing finishing now and then is no bad thing. I'm aware that quite a few people use melamine these days, which may or may not be as a result of the "how-to" I wrote at the beginning of the year, but a long time ago I was also quite forthright about my views on friction polish as a pen finish.
I wrote it back in 2015 but my views haven't changed I'm afraid - the link to the thread in which I probably offended countless people is here: http://www.penturners.co.uk/tools-e...-polish-finish.html?highlight=friction+polish
A nice set of pens Craig. Thanks for the kind mention.
I use Phil’s method with melamine. I also use his method with acrylic lacquer except I don’t stop the lathe when applying the lacquer. I hold the spray can very close to a piece of folded tissue then apply along the blank one end to the other & back again in one movement. I wait thirty seconds then buff.i apply four to five coats.
I hope this is of help to you.
