Perspex pen

Hi group, i have some smoked perspex plastic sheet that i would like to make a pen from, the plastic is see through to a certain extent and i am wondering what colour to paint the tube, silver or black, i am going to use a chrome stream line kit and have an aluminium accent piece in both ends, cheers Dave ps should i sand the plastic piece before gluing or will that show through on the finished pen

Personally I'd use matt black...and paint the inside of the blank as well as the tube. The problem with the brass tube/silver paint is that anything metallic tends to catch the light and makes it more noticeable, especially where glue is a bit uneven.

If it's a sheet of smoked acrylic which is what it sounds like then you will never hide the tube so will need to be carefull and drilling will also show up. You can sand it but really the same applies unless you can get the hole to a polished finish or as Melanie says, paint the hole.

You need also to be sure it's acrylic as smoke finish was produced in polycarbonate and pvc also which turn a little differently.

Many thanks for all your thoughts, its good to bounce of people who have more knowledge on these subjects. I was given lots of plastic scraps years ago by a school caretaker who was having a clear out and just presumed it was perspex, i now have a good idea how to proceed and will post some pics of the project works out. Hi Bob, thanks for the offer but i cannot travel far these days hence my tittle name but you are more than welcome at my place, 1 minute from the ice ring, cheers Dave

:wink:ha that brings back a few memories, I dated a lass from Monkseaton for a while in my youth many moons ago. Not too far from the ice rink

I'm in Alaska at the minute then back to Vancouver but due home later this week, I'll give you a call next time I'm in your area.
Reason for the info is because I worked in the plastics distribution industry for a while so know a little about the materials and still have samples even though well over 20 years ago

What Melanie said also mix some paint with the glue when you glue in the tube.
