Philippine Ebony, just about to make a pen with some. Anybody ever turned any before?
I was just wondering what it is like to turn, any surprises in store?

Can't see it being much different to any other Ebony. As Brian says sharp tools should see you right

Nope, nothing special as the others said, sharp tools and prepare to go indoors as black as the ace of spades.

Just like regular African ebony. Turns easy enough with sharp tools but be careful to avoid cracking due to heat buildup when sanding. As with all black ebonies it a mucky business, you'll look like collier !
Phillipine ebony is pretty rare stuff these days.

All Ebony drilling needs great care any build up in swarf is anathama then or later with splits, turning carefully , prolonged sanding is unneccessary and harmful. Going through the grades helps. This timber Snakewood and so many others have history.

I have made a few pens from African Ebony, Paul, with quite good results all except one which split. I hadn't noticed the split when assembling the pen so i am assuming it came later, so as Dave says, be careful of heat buildup .. No problems with turning the stuff though ..
