I sometimes turn natural pine cones, right after the harvest in a nearby forest with the help of voluntary squirrels, unstabilized, no pouring. Just looking for the correct cone (I use Pinus pinaster), aiming right through the axis while drilling and liberally using CA while turning. Sometime it breaks, sometime some part of the cone is uglier than cheap cardboard, often resin comes under the CA finish as white strokes and the bin is useful. Sometimes, it turns out nicely.
