Okay, before I get shot down in flames for starting a thread that may have already been done I did do a search on the subject and didn't find what I am looking for so I thought bugger it I'll see what happens when I start this discussion. Sorry Brian if it has been done to death already.

:pray::shitfan:

My question is this: I have the planet mandrel saver (I did start a thread about this a while back in regard to using it with my mandrel but this is another issue) and a mandrel from Penkitsuk. I find the mandrel shaft is a very tight fit in the hole in the end of the saver which I would expect however. it's so tight it won't withdraw when I want to take the mandrel apart to get a finished pen off so I have to use a piece of rubber to turn the saver against the shaft to release it. I would like to know if this is how it should be or whether I'm using a saver that should be used with the planet mandrel?:nooidea:

I have never known that Ray, mind you I have only had one mandrel save and one mandrel, rarely used.
Sorry can't help with this one but it is obviously not right.
Investigate the sizes and act accordingly is my best init?

I've heard people saying about oversized mandrels before which would cause the saver to be very tight.

I guess if the Mandrel saver is from Planet and the bar is from Penkits then the bar could be oversized for that saver :thinks:
Do you still have the original Planet bar? If so measure the diameter of both bars with a Vernier Calliper and see what the difference is :nooidea:

Rub some bronz non stick paste on the mandrel it will stop it sticking and it will eventually make it fit I have a tube that I use to stop my chuck / face plate sticking on the lathe so I will look up the full name of it tomorrow for you

I never had a planet bar or mandrel. I've been wondering if I should get one. However what I have works it's just that I have to twist the saver really hard to get it off the bar.

I can't remember which mandrel was the larger one but I am sure it wasn't the Planet rotour as that is what I have.
I seem to think it was Axminster and their bushes that were crazy and only fitted their own stuff init?

The tolerances do vary a bit. I have found that Axminster bushes will not always fit other mandrels for example. I think that's what Brian is referring to.

If lubrication doesn't help a rub with wet and dry might be enough to get a good fit. (Ooh! err! missus :goesred:)

Yep, had a run in before with Axminster bushes not fitting the Planet mandrel.

I'd Vernier them both first to be sure which is the "oddball" and then as Walter says a spin with some wet and dry should fix it, must only be out by a few thou (if that).

Best of.
