Had a play about to test the things I keep failing on.

Ply, I have successfully turned very little in the way of Ply. This time I sharpened my carbides before turning it so had fresh blades and it worked well, I have used new blades before now and ended up with bits coming away,

Pleased with the outcome.

Finishing has always been a failure with wood for me,
So I tried a different technique.
Put far too much CA on the first run and ended with a deep "trench", ok more of a gauge than a trench.
Went through the micro pads and not managed to get rid of it.
However I know where it went wrong and how.

Got a decent shine, much better than I have ever had.

Pleased with the outcome.

i tried to get a shine on the one i did, failed miserably...but i didnt use CA...i will on the next one, whenever that may be.. looking good though mate

looking good there Gary, ply can be a bugger as the adhesives can change the look and the way it finishes. I hate CA and if I use it too much get an allergic reaction to it.

I like ply, but as Eamonn says there are so many different plays and resins it can be a mine field.... Old Dymondwood was bonded with phenolic resin and could be a bugger to drill but took a shine beautifully.... Axminster did some ply blanks but the wood was softer than butter and the dye stained the other laminations when sanding.... I have found the ply from gunstock to be a good mix but can be expensive.... As to CA its not my goto finish but it can work...
