ive been turning 7mm twist, streamline and sierra pens using kits from a variety of sources.

The issue I have is that there always seems to be a little bit of play/movement in the refill when writing.
ie it seems that the hole in the end of the nib is too big. This results in the refill becoming a little unstable and gives a small 'click' when writing.

Ive experimented with adjusting the amount that the refill comes out, but still get the same results.

I hope this less than technical description gives you a good idea what I mean.

Im aware these kits are at the bottom end of the the pen turning price scale but Ive used them as a good place to start and learn the art of pen turning.

My questions are
1 is this just something we have to accept?
2 Are ther kits where this doesnt happen?
3 Am I just being picky?

I never noticed the click before but have just had a play with one and see what you mean but think its something that we have to accept as there has to be a tolerance albeit it being a thou too much. As far as I know all the kits are the same and it won't work pushing the nib in or out as the end of the refill is parallel.

As far as being picky goes, there is nothing wrong with striving for perfection in my opinion.

Been using Slims seems like a long time now the play in that area is negligible compared with many expensive kits where the biro is allowed to fairly flop sideways and up and down under spring pressure. I agree a closer fit better feed means more consistent quality is the aim we all have.

I've never noticed. But then I am a Brummie living in Manchester, so there's no hope for me :funny:
I'll be having a scribble with various kits this evening

Never noticed either and nobody's ever brought it to my attention up to yet. Is it really worth worrying about?

Watching Baldrick walking his little legs off last night following canals and countyside views (deliberate spelling ) there is so much history over all in the UK it seems local derbies are universal. I keep in mind Pauls comments a while back about that man and although no man is an island he Baldrick does his best.
