Hi all...

I fancy having a go at pyrography.... I do this Woodturning thing for fun... I don’t sell things or do this in any professional way so ...with that as a background....

What’s the recommendations for possible machine choice?

Thanks in advance

Yes, Peter Childs..

There are two models, one with single pen outlet nd one with a double.

I had the single one and it was superb, only sold it because it never really got used.

Go on e-bay there are loads of Original Peter Child ones there.

Link below, they are made by Robert Sorby now and not Peter Childs, however marketed under his brand name.

Hi Kevin,

My wife uses a Burnie Star, ST171 . See burns on most wood and all leather. Its a Germany made machine.
What she achieves has been very good.
*bay sells them cheaper than most other sites.
If she could afford it, she would go for a Peter Childs make

The cheap soldering iron type is harder to control as you need to hold it further up the tool.

Has anyone used Fire Writer Professional Pyrography Kit or is Peter Childs the best ?

Yes, I’ve got the Firewriter. I went to the tool show in Exeter and there was a Pyrography Artist there. She was using a Razertip but recommended the Firewriter over the Peter Child’s machine. She wasn’t selling any equipment but it was on special offer at the show at £80 so I bought one. It’s very good.

Things I learnt after I bought the Firewriter: The Peter Child’s machine is only 30 watts and the maximum recommended wire thickness is only .6 mm. The Firewriter is 40 watts and can use much thicker wire up to .9 mm. The Razertip is 45 watts and can also use .9mm wire. I want to use the machine for texturing turned vessels at some point and therefore really need to be able to use the thicker wire.

Although yet to be confirmed the Firewriter and Razertip both appear to use the same connector so I’m hoping I can use Razertip pens on my machine. The Peter Child pens are the most expensive and don’t use a RCA connector like the others.

If you look around you can get all three machines for about the same price - about £130. If I hadn’t bought the the Firewriter at £80 I would definitely go for the Razertip, more power and more accessories than any other make. Having said that the Firewriter is made by Antex who have been making soldering irons for 70 years so I’m expecting it to last.
