Hi a friend of mine (honest)

Had been told to coat walnut with oil before a CA finish, which he did two months later there were clouds in the finish.

He has stripped the pen back and this time just finished with CA.

I have said that some one once told me that CA is a glue not a finish... I use Melamine.

But any comments I could pass on?

A lot of Americans recommend BLO, Boiled linsead oil to wipe on before the CA personally never used it....but when it comes to Walnut I use old gun stocks or stock blanks which can be impregnated with oil so have never used CA on them. I use either Truoil or other proprietary stock finishes....it takes longer, but has always worked for me and has been durable.....I am trying another hardening oil finish for durability

I use to use BLO and CA with some great results but have changed to Melamine Lacquer.

But having said that I would not put an oil on any turning and then try to apply any other finish on top except maybe some soft paste wax after the oil has cured

I certainly have given Truoil a go over time but regret to say it has a short keeping life before it goes solid and useless. A friend of mine has used quantities of Liberon Black Bison polish a last thing after sealing with a sprayed on laquer.

Yes I’ve heard that about Truoil Peter. It’s put me off buying it to be honest. There are some “recipes” for making your own on the web but I’ve no idea how good they are.

I have used Danish Oil on Walnut, then a couple coats of sanding sealer depending on how thirsty the wood is (knocked back with 400grit) followed by a few coats of sray lacquer. Finally polished with some paste wax. Looks ok but can't guarentee for how long though. Not that I am expert in finishes. Only time will tell. Good question though.

Naturally oily timbers & ca don’t always make a good marriage. I give these timbers a rub down with meths to degrease before I apply a finish.
