Razors 2 (1).jpgRazors 2 (2).jpg

Hi, Guys,

I've got some Mach3 razor kits o/h so turned a couple earlier. Thought I'd get away from the usual slim handle and go for something a bit more chunkier, and here they are. Several things I picked up as I looked at the finished kits. (1) Having those non-slip grip rings spoils the flow of the blank, and (2) the channels are a bugger to clear out! It's quite easy to remove the debris caused by the sanding process (water and a stiff paintbrush is ideal). However, removing the liquid finishes used for polishing is not. The Brasso is difficult to get out, and so is the polish. Even if you carefully revolve the razor with a spikey summat or other in the channels doesn't get rid of all the residue. Something to ponder when I do more.

Regards,

Bob.

Nice looking razors Bob. I see your problem. Try a couple of deeper grooves & stretch some fine O rings into the grooves then you don't have the problem with the polish. Just a thought.

Now I looked at them twice, thought like you that it spoil the looks.:thinks:

Then I thought it might be a good idea when holding the handle making it feel better.

Practically it looks really good but as you say, looks may not be.

I'm still in the camp as they look good with the rings around them.

Love em mate. I find when I play with my designs try to make the grooves a little wider and round out the bottom with the corner of a skew and a small rounded chisel easy to make from drill rod or masonry nails. Works for me and yes I agree the need for extra help holding them is needed. Stay away from O rings they do get shabby.

Hi again, guys,

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated.

Bill, re your O ring suggestion - if I fitted rubber rings in my grooves they'd slip down out of sight, thus making them useless. Actually, the grooves do provide an OK grip, but at the cost of the overall appearance.

Eamonn, it's a funny thing - looking at them I wish that I'd not added the rings, but holding the razor gives me that secure feeling that I'm not about to drop it, or cut my throat if it twists in my fingers! So, it's H&S versus Eye Candy, lol!

Peter, thanks for the tip re nails - I'll bear that in mind.

As a long term wet shaver MPO is that you don't need rings for grips on acrilic handles, brush or razor. In fact there are quite a few 'plastic' handled DE razors on sale today and none have the grips. In fact I believe that it is the metal handles which have any ribbing. ALL handles slip if your fingers are soapy, but rinsing correctly while shaving 'plastic' grips well with wet fingers I find.

Just my 2d worth, good luck with later ones.

Adding to my last post. Small rings like that are just another trap for soap scum to dry, and can be a pain in the a**e to clean out. All shaving gear collects scum no matter how well rinsed, the less traps the better IMO.

Hi, Mark,

Thanks for the suggestion re toothbrush. The problem is that of potentially spoiling the finish. If the brush does that then there's no way of polishing it again except by hand - and guess what will happen then - yep, the rings will clog up again, LOL!

1000 grit folded cleans out real easy the finish then easy cleaned cotton cloth on edge held tight works for me. Bur shallow for Razors might be the ticket mate.

I must admit I only have one acrylic handled razor, the rest are all old time Gillette, but when using I soak the razor in a glass of Steradent tablet & warm water once a month to remove the scum. Some folks don't and I have stripped a couple of these old razors ready for re-plating and if you could see inside them you would cringe.:rolling:

ps; toothbrush is good, if you can get into the nooks and crannies, and shouldn't do any harm. Also the top catch piece for the head will become covered in crud also. Being a lazy b****r I prefer to soak.
