Hi, Guys,

(Apologies to the folks who have heard about this already...) but about two years ago I got a hold of a pallet. I dismembered it and found it to be made of hardwood which had loads of grain features, and a colour range from deep-brown to off-white. Since then I have made some striking pens from it. Earlier, I grabbed mid-brown and dark-brown pieces and turned them into razor handles. As there is no strict guidelines to follow when making these I allowed my unbridled lust to...errr... hang on, I'm getting off track here...Anyway, I made this couple. I went to town on BLO in the hope that this would prevent later water ingress, and did the same with friction polish. If I sell these I'm off to Hawaii or summat in case I've not water-proofed them well enough!

Look no razors here, guys!

Bob one of the finest round tables I have seen came from Meranti that was a shed frame abandoned in a field where I worked for umteen years in the weather it came up like your razors strong and interesting colour worthy with that fine grain, apparently where it is grown the tropical nature shows no growth rings. A lecturer in Forestry spoke in depth as an expert on this we used to meet at the Forestry Dept at our main University for years visiting each others workshops on a regular basis.

Hi, Peter,

Thanks for the info. I reckon that inch for inch this wood stands alongside many of the more desirable woods - woods too good to be turned into pallets and packing cases. I've got a fair amount of the mahogany-coloured pieces left but, unlike mahogany these pieces are full of grains and swirls. I tend to save them for good-quality fountain pens and rollerballs. And all this stuff was about to be burned or skipped! What a waste!

Wow Bob you have brightened up my day no end. I thought I was perhaps the Ugliest Bugger on here but with a Fizzog like that I might only only just pip you at the post.

I'm guessing if you keep them for yourself the finish will hold up just fine :whistling:

Jeez, Woody, I was hoping you were still locked in your new workshop, playing with all that stuff Vi bought for you! But no, even you, my mentor, has come out into the daylight and joined the rest of the hecklers! Woe is me!
