You will know when the head stock gets hot real quick if the bearings are ok ( or need oiling ) but also turning it by hand before you start there is a preload on bearings as a rule to keep them in place and to avoid shaft travel when you cut with the lathe lots of stresses in the lathe. A capacitor in a single phase motor can be for capacitor start or capacitor run. If its for starting and is faulty turning by hand will allow the motor to run under no load and will hum. By now in the scheme of things you will have a solution trust you do. Even in my drill press I use an overkill sized motor a one HP.. 2 hp in my VL150 three phase.
