I am looking at this bench drill. Don't like drilling on lathe. I contacted seller said it has press of up to 60mm is this adequate for pen blanks? I don't wanna buy a old machine as I am not mechanically minded. The jet with huge discount sounded perfect from axminster. But they sold out. Any specific drill benches you can recommend up to 300 would be appreciated. Also what is a quill? What size chuck do I need to fit a 7mm drill bit. Thanks in advance

I think a good drill press will come with a 13mm capacity Chuck and I would go for one with this size chuck as you never know what you will do with it. The quill is the part that the chuck is attached to and extends down to the piece being drilled and retracts back inside the body of the machine if that makes sense. Have you had a look at Clarke machines from Machine Mart? I have one of these and they are not bad.

Vanessa, 60mm is right on the limit of being enough. You're much better off with 80mm of travel.

Peter.

Hi Vanessa

The 60mm travel of the Record will not be enough.

Axminster's own Trade bench pillar drill is almost as good as the Jet machine. It too has a chuck/quill travel of 80mm.

Chuck size is measured by the diameter of the largest drill bit shank that will fit. So any chuck larger than 7mm will take a 7mm drill. The Axminster has a 13mm chuck which is fine.
