Yesterday I treated myself to a MT2 Record pen Mandrel and noticed that it tightens the mandrel bar by means of a collet does this mean I can use other collets for holding small bits of work and if so what size of collet set do I need?

Everything depends on if it is dependant on only this one or the nature of the collet , more info and pictures needed, brand name etc. How long is a piece of string.

I would ask Record if they have any.
It depends if it's a standard type of collet. If it is then you just need to buy other collets in the sizes you want. One of the most popular types of collet are the ER type. Details of the range here:

I've got an ER32 chuck for my lathe that takes collets from 2mm up to 20mm. They are on eBay quite cheaply from China.

Thank you William having looked at the mandrel the hole in the middle of the sleeve which causes the collet to tighten is not big enough to get anything much bigger than the mandrel bar so will have a look on eBay for one thank you for the tip.
Glad to be of help Bob. Collet chucks from China on eBay are quite cheap. Depending on type of fitting and size I've paid between about £7.50 and £15.00. Collets are extra of course and available singly or in sets. There seem to be more fixtures and fittings that take ER32 so it's a good size to get unless you only want to work on really small stuff.

you can try Ali express as well, that is where I got my ER 40 collet set and chuck.

It's on a MT2 taper but it's safely held in place with a draw bar. This is simply a piece of M10 threaded rod and a nut.
