I do like Red Mallee, but I've done 2 now and they were both as hard as nails.

Is that normal ?

That's a nice result Alex, really nice.

It can be very hard I had parts of this burr that were very hard when i cut it in to blanks

Red Mallee especially years dry can be almost unworkable years ago a mate full time turner of bowls built a swimming pool in his yard and chucked all his Aussie burls in turning them wet storing them by the hundred finishing the bowls when dry.

The Red mallee is becoming scarcer than so much is being plundered now is the time to get some while you can. My mate the burl cutter ships it to the states by the tons gets premium for the Red Mallee.

Loved your Pen Alex the character is brought out neatly, cleanly with that Pen Kit IMHO your pen making has taken an upward curve since you started hunting timber in real earnest as is hown by your choices when you buy timber. Some friends of mine who professionally used to go out and cut, dry, store timber have all had to give it up in this country distances, petrol prices, time taken have proved the value of top suppliers buying in bulk and really making money with the new found time this without exception.

Like musical chairs the fun stops with the music. Someone always misses out.
